Davos Life Science recently published its findings on how oral supplementation of Tocotrienols-rich fraction (TRF) \u2013 a palm oil extract \u2013 could alleviate the severity of ulcerative colitis in mice.<\/p>\n
Ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that could lead to continuous inflammation in the digestive tract.<\/p>\n
In the study, the healthy mice were used to compare against the mice that were induced with ulcerative\u00a0colitis using dextran sulfate sodium (DSS).<\/p>\n
The DSS induced-ulcerative colitis mice were then grouped into four treatment groups: 1) control, 2)\u00a0150mg\/kg\/day of TRF, 3) 150mg\/kg\/day of alpha-tocopherol (\u03b1TP) \u2013 also a form of vitamin E, and 4)\u00a075mg\/kg\/day of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA).<\/p>\n
The results showed that mice treated with TRF had a lower disease activity index. The index is measured by the amount of body weight loss, stool consistency and bleeding. The higher the index, the higher the severity of ulcerative colitis.<\/p>\n
