Medium-chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are high-performance lipids with chain lengths of eight and ten carbon atoms. For this reason, they are commonly used in medical nutrition, serving as a fast-metabolising energy source for patients with fat malabsorption, pancreatic insufficiency, or metabolic disorders. Due to their lipophilicity, MCTs enhance the solubility and bioavailability of lipophilic drugs. They act as emollients and penetration enhancers in creams, gels, and patches. In soft gel capsules and tablets, MCTs are used as lubricants and solubilisers to improve the processing and stability of solid dosage forms—for example, sealing the surface of capsules to prevent them from sticking together.
